Mission Critical Design

The data center can be considered the central nervous system of an organization, and for something so crucial, downtime is not an option. Along with our experience in energy efficient practices, Rock Brook’s professionals continuously research and apply the latest technologies when designing these complex centers. Rock Brook’s engineers and design professionals are focused on designing infrastructure to keep your operation up and running smoothly and efficiently, providing you with the mission critical data center, power, and cooling infrastructure solutions that your operation requires when it matters most, and with that comes peace of mind for the facility owner.

We work closely with our clients to find the right infrastructure solutions for their specific needs, whether it means installing new or refurbished data center equipment or providing high quality power generation maintenance and project management services.

By working with Rock Brook for your critical infrastructure requirements, you are guaranteed to receive the maximum amount of transparency, collaboration, and communication so that we can provide you with the right solution every time.

Some of our mission critical design services include:

  • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Systems
  • Standby Power Plants
  • Modular Data Center Design & Commissioning
  • Central Chiller Plants
  • Raised Floor Distribution Systems

We work closely with the project team at the concept design phase to understand immediate needs, along with future requirements. Each facility varies by geographic location, industry, building codes, executive management vision, budget, building construction, tier classification, and infrastructure redundancy; those factors drive the final design solution.

Energy Modeling & Analysis

Energy modeling is key to an optimized building design and to reducing long-term energy use and operating costs for a building or facility owner. At Rock Brook, our team has extensive experience in whole-building energy modeling for both retrofit and new construction projects, and we work diligently to analyze various building envelope and system alternatives to provide valuable cost-benefit information to our clients to assist in their capital investment planning.

Quite simply, our professional engineers, designers, and LEED®-accredited professionals help our clients build sustainable, energy-efficient buildings that leave a smaller carbon footprint. Our team at Rock Brook has allowed our clients to comply with regulations and benefit from numerous local and federal project financing opportunities, and a growing number of projects in our portfolio have achieved the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification.

Some of our energy modeling and analysis services include:

  • Whole Building Energy Modeling
  • Comparative Analysis of Various HVAC and Lighting Systems
  • ASHRAE 90.1 Energy Compliance
  • Energy Modeling for LEED® Rating System Compliance
  • Optimization of Building Systems
  • Using Predictive Analysis Coupled with Energy Monitoring to Improve Existing Energy Performance
Identification and Prioritization of Various Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs)

Sustainable Design & LEED Services

The Rock Brook Consulting Group offers sustainable project designs that are both creative and environmentally responsible. Our designs have been successfully implemented into numerous LEED®-certified projects. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, the LEED® Green Building Certification program is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of sustainable buildings. Our firm is proud to create environmentally-innovative designs that not only reduce a building’s carbon footprint and promote resource preservation, but also provide occupant comfort and well-being.

Our designs enable clients to create sustainable buildings by:

Minimizing energy consumption through economical use of energy, land, water, and other resources.
Decreasing atmospheric emissions, and thereby preventing negative environmental impacts, especially those related to greenhouse gases, global warming, particulates, or acid rain.
Curtailing discharge of harmful liquid effluents and solid wastes, including those resulting from the ultimate demolition of the building itself at the end of its useful life.
Reducing negative impacts on site ecosystems.
Expanding the quality of indoor environment, including air, thermal regime, illumination, acoustics/noise, and visual aspects.

We have successfully evaluated many MEP systems to find cost savings and sustainability; some of which are presented below:

  • Night Pre-cooling
  • Indirect Evaporative Cooling
  • Air-to-Air Heat Recovery
  • Solar Energy System – Photovoltaic
  • Displaceable Ventilation
  • Light Conveyor
  • Combination Space/Water Heaters
  • Water-Conserving Plumbing Fixtures
  • Ground-Source Heat Pumps
  • Graywater Systems
  • Water-Loop Heat Pump Systems
  • Point-of-Use Domestic Hot Water Heaters
  • Thermal Energy Storage for Cooling
  • Direct-Contact Water Heaters

Commissioning

Commissioning can optimize the energy-efficient design features of a new building and improve overall building performance. The Rock Brook Consulting Group’s commissioning process ensures that systems perform interactively according to the contract documents, design intent, and the Owner’s operational needs. Commissioning can begin during pre-design, design, construction, or building start-up, but offers significantly great cost-effective benefits when it begins during the pre-design or design phases.

Commissioning verifies that equipment is installed and operates properly. After the commissioning process, equipment typically lasts longer, works more reliably, requires fewer repairs during its lifetime, and improves the productivity of processes. Commissioning can optimize the energy efficient design features of a new building, reduce change orders and liability exposure, and confirm the systems function according to design intent.

Benefits of Commissioning:

  • Optimized energy use
  • Reduced operating costs
  • Improved building systems documentation
  • Improved working environment
  • Help to establish maintenance and operation policies

Our commissioning program is tailored to each individual project. We offer both fundamental and enhanced commissioning services as described by the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® program. Even if LEED® is not pursued, clients have realized benefits from implementing a commissioning program early in their projects.

Construction Administration

At Rock Brook, we provide comprehensive services to our clients from planning through project design, but we also help our clients keep their construction projects running smoothly and on schedule with our construction administration services during the construction phase of a project. By providing close supervision and on-site support during construction – and coordinating with the owner, design professionals, and sub-consultants – we help our clients reduce potentially costly conflicts that disrupt the construction process.

During the construction phase of a project, our project engineers oversee a contractor’s work to ensure proper construction techniques, materials, equipment, and personnel are employed throughout the duration of the project, and monitor the contractor’s progress and compliance with the contract documents. With our construction administration services, Rock Brook provides a close review of a contractor’s sequence of operations and progress schedule to ensure the successful and timely completion of the project.
